PREHISTORIC AMERICA: a journey through the Ice Age and beyond. by Miles Barton, Nigel Bean, Stephen Dunleavy, Ian Gray, Adam White.
Authors take a journey back to the time when human beings first arrived in North America 13,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age. Their survey spans from icy Arctic to tropical Florida swamps when wildlife was more spectacular and varied in our region than it is today. In their book they travel the continent by region introducing beasts including ground sloths, glyptodonts, mastodonts, mammoths, saber-toothed and scimitar-toothed cats, and the short-faced bear. Alongside these now-lost creatures were lions, cheetahs, zebras, and camels also now lost. Many species from that time, however, persist such as caribou, grizzly bears, eagles, salmon, bison, coyotes, prairie dogs, condors, alligators, and jaguars. Evidence for this animal assemblage is provided from fossil bone deposits and inferences are made on how the animals lived, some feeding on plants and some on each other. The arrival of humans is also presented, and their potential effect on the life forms already present. Color photographs, maps, 192 large-format pages, index.
ISBN: 0-30-09819-7. 2002. Yale University Press. Order #: MISC2707 cloth$29.95.
