Anderson joined others both Black and white to join John Brown's attempt to start a cause to end slavery and was the only Black combatant to survive the raid. Included essays tell of the cause to be demonstrated by the raid and events leading to it as well as the other raiders and leaders. Explains other early attempts to free slaves. Photographs and drawings, 130 pages.

A WALKER'S GUIDE TO HARPERS FERRY, WEST VIRGINIA. by Dave Gilbert.
See remnants from the past of this historically important town where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers come together to flow through a break, or "water gap" in ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here was the site of extensive water-powered and coal-fired factories, a federal armory, and a firehouse where John Brown and some brave followers attempted to start a movement they felt would speedily free America's enslaved humans. There is also the C&O Canal and its locks, which raised boats 605 feet in its 184 1/2 miles. Text includes the Robert Harper's ferry, too, which gave the place its name. Geologic aspects and natural trees are also covered, contributing to its scenic appeal. 28 photos, 11 maps, 80 pages.
