Most of the media items listed on VistaBooks Encore at VistaBooks Online are like new even though they may not have a recent publishing date (these dates are shown in most cases). These are inventory hitems held on the VistaBooks publisher/distributor's shelves but never sold--such as small quantities that were left over when fllling a bookstore order.
If not like-new, condition is described. And pricing of t;hese is mostly at a discount off the original retail price.
Other books and media items such as those on VistaBooks VINTAGE include a range of extinsic factors such as pubication date, edition and printing sequence, and availability or rareness, plus comparable recent sales if any. Additonal criteria in pricing include intrtinisc factors such as condition, internal notations if any, whether signed or inscribed by author or notable prior owner, relevance of subject matter to a field, pertinence to today. Thus, there are more intrinsic factors than extrinsic in pricing a VINTAGE item and prices for the same title can and do vary widely. There is even another factor on the willingness of a seller to accept offers depending on how the item is to be used and cared for by the potential buyer. And by the seller's willingness to part with a personal item at a lower price rather than await for a higher one that would overcome resistance to loss of a treasured item. Is it any wonder that prices vary widely even for items that are otherwise much the same extrinsincly?
Describing the conditon of special materials is a thus partly an art and, although word-based standard terms have been desecribed for doing this, such standards may be defined differetly and applied with differing interpretations. And therefore if an item is not as we described it, please report same before returning--for an adjustment, return for exchange or credit or refund.
Our aim is to find good homes for these items and we want you to be pleased with your selections just as we want to be pleased with our sale. Although we do not encourage below-lising price offers, we undersstand that sellers have their own priorities and that offering prices will vary with ttime and possibly since an item was listed (this can go the other way, too). Your offer may be countered with a revised listing at a higher price as we reconsider factors.
Yes, it is an art to price a book that is out-of-print, rare, and/or collectible. Searches on specialized listings of such books often reveal a wide range of prices for the same printing of a book, often without the information needed to compare otherwise similar copies. To complicate, a book that is listed as a single item may get sold and no longer be available for price comparisons. Thus it is likely that some of the prices we have established based on searches of a certain date are no longer valid, having gone up or down. And valuations can change in the future, too. So, if you feel our price for an item of interest to you is priced incorrectly, let us know and we will reconsider (email vistabooks encore). All are also invited to query for information on any aspect of a book, and this is open especially to dealers.
Both buyer and seller are also challenged by the fact that most rare/collectible items offered are single copies and subject to being sold at any time.
Describing tne conditon of a book--and understanding the definitions, which are necessarily subjective--is another of difficult aspect to communicate. To help, there are semi-standard definitions used in the antiquarian book world. Our descriptions attempt to follow them. For our and your reference, guidance on this topic is provided here from another website, noting that other dealers might have other interpretatons.
