Oh, Ranger! a book about the national parks. by Horace M. Albright and Frank J. Taylor.
author Albright in his early ranger uniform.
This is a reprint of the classic, 1928 edition. Here is a nostalgic look at America's early national parks and their ranger service by their director of that time. Author Albright was also a long-time superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. Originally published in 1928 by Stanford University Press, and available continuously ever since with many editons and reprints. This book relates humorous stories of bears and other wild animals, Indians, fishing, park "dudes and sagebrushers" (hotel guests and campers, respectively), the fledgling ranger service, and the antics of the American tourist early in the roaring '20s. This edition includes the late author's last foreword and a tribute from another early Yellowstne ranger--and former president--Gerald Ford. Includes a list of the parks that exsted when the book was first published--a number that is vastly expanded today--at the same time showing how the park ideas we have today were first established and promoted--not all of which remain as founding principles but whose beginnings will help remind us why changes have occurred. We have had a program of donating copies of this title to volnteer ranger retirees who staffed the Museum of the Natiunal Park Ranger at Yellowstone National Park and hope to resume this program and would send a free copy now to any sch ranger voluteer requesting one. And we would do the same for anyone voluiteereing in the Volnteers for National Parks program. Just ask!.
To the pen-and-ink drawings from the original have been added 50 early park photographs. 160 pages.
